Évaluation préliminaire des impacts écologiques de l’ouverture de la retenue naturelle du lac Sofia en février 2024

(In French) A rapid preliminary assessment of the ecological impacts of dam opening at the outlet of Lake Sofia, Madagascar. This opening resulted in loss of more than 70% of the lake’s freshwater.

Assessments were carried out of avain biodiversity, of sedimentation increases in rice paddies, of changes in lake depth and on the impacts on freshwater vegetation upstream and downstream of Lake Sofia. Recommendations are made on further biological research, on ecological restoration and on logistical and infrastructure considerations

Initial GIS Analysis of Degradation in Lake Sofia and Lake Tseny, Madagascar

Research report on the sources of suspended sediment in Lake Sofia and Lake Tseny, Madagascar. The high amount of suspended sediment, in these freshwater systems is a problem as it limits the growth of healthy populations of macrophytes, invertebrates and fish.

The analysis suggests that the biggest source of this pollution is from erosion and transportation by water. Given the diffuse nature of the sediment sources across catchments, it may be necessary to adapt agricultural practices to reduce sediment influx and protect wetlands.
