Initial GIS Analysis of Degradation in Lake Sofia and Lake Tseny, Madagascar
Research report on the sources of suspended sediment in Lake Sofia and Lake Tseny, Madagascar. The high amount of suspended sediment, in these freshwater systems is a problem as it limits the growth of healthy populations of macrophytes, invertebrates and fish.
The analysis suggests that the biggest source of this pollution is from erosion and transportation by water. Given the diffuse nature of the sediment sources across catchments, it may be necessary to adapt agricultural practices to reduce sediment influx and protect wetlands.
