Setting the Direction: GCBC’s New Research Strategy
The Global Centre on Biodiversity for Climate (GCBC) has published its updated Research Strategy, setting out the programme’s approach, key areas of research interest and investment strategy for the years ahead.
GCBC is an Official Development Assistance (ODA) research programme funded by the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). It generates evidence on how the protection, restoration and sustainable use of biodiversity can strengthen climate resilience and reduce poverty.
Closing an evidence gap
Transformative, systems-level change is hard to achieve in practice — and evidence on how it happens, and under what conditions it delivers equitable, lasting outcomes, remains limited. That’s the gap GCBC research is designed to help close.
From strategy to action
The Research Strategy marks the starting point for GCBC’s next phase of work. Next week, that direction becomes action: the theme launch of the programme’s fourth Research Grant Competition (RGC4) will be announced, aligning funding opportunities with the priorities set out in the Strategy.
To achieve successful outcomes for people and the planet, the interconnections between biodiversity loss, climate change, and livelihoods demand more systemic understanding. We urgently need evidence on how to navigate interdependencies and design policies that maximise both social and environmental benefits.
