This updated Research Strategy, sets out GCBC’s research approach, key areas of research interest and investment strategy. It should be read alongside GCBC’s Theory of Change, below, which accompanies this document and sets out the programme’s underpinning assumptions, pathways to impact and intended outcomes.
GEDSI Approach
This GEDSI Approach sets out how GCBC expects gender equality, disability and social inclusion to be embedded across funded projects. It covers what GEDSI means in an R&D context, the minimum compliance requirements all grantees must meet, and the empowering and transformative approaches projects are encouraged to pursue beyond that baseline.
Impact Pathways: Rapid Evidence Review
In this Rapid Evidence Review, completed in 2025, Itad provides insights to inform the Global Centre on Biodiversity for Climate’s Theory of Change refresh. The paper analyses recent evidence on biodiversity, climate resilience, and livelihoods, highlighting six impact pathways and emphasising the complex, context-dependent, and multi-stakeholder routes through which meaningful research impact emerges.

GCBC Theory of Change
The Theory of Change (ToC) sets out how the programme intends to contribute to its intended impact. It covers the context, the pathways to impact, and the assumptions, risks and uncertainties involved in delivery. This 2025 update goes further in articulating the pathways to impact and the system-wide shifts the programme aims to stimulate.
Annual Evidence Review 23-24
GCBC’s second Annual Evidence Review presents key research insights from the current cohort of funded projects between April 2023 and March 2024. It details the progress made by the GCBC programme towards its goals of preserving biodiversity, improving climate outcomes and protecting vulnerable communities, and highlights the direction for future evidence delivery.

Evidence Synthesis Report Nov 23
The Evidence Synthesis Report was created to present the findings of the 15 projects funded by GCBC in its first year of operation and exhibits the positive impacts that safeguarding nature can have for climate and people.

Research Strategy Feb 2024
This Research Strategy sets out the vision through the theory of change and ambition for a systems approach (Section 2) for the GCBC programme to ensure that new scientific evidence, knowledge and partnerships developed support the poor directly or indirectly, with improved livelihoods and resilience to climate change, while sustainably managing and using biodiversity.
