This photo guide is a compilation of information on Madagascar’s grasses (Poaceae).

Based on expert-generated and verified information in Malagasy and English on 269 species of grasses -around half of the known species. Includes an index to Malagasy common names as well as scientific names.

Woody species diversity and structure across natural forest coffee, semi-forest coffee, and homegarden coffee in the Yayu Coffee Forest Biosphere Reserve, Southwest Ethiopia

An assessment of woody species variation in coffee agroforestry systems in Ethiopia. From 90 plots, 27 woody species were recorded in natural forest, semi-forest, and homegarden coffee systems of the Yayu Coffee Forest Biosphere Reserve.

Natural forest coffee showed the highest biodiversity, structural complexity, and shade-tree regeneration. Semi-forest coffee was similar structurally, while homegarden coffee had significantly lower diversity. Similarity indices showed strong species overlap between natural and semi-forest systems, confirming their key role in biodiversity conservation.

Promoting Agroecological Productivity through Smallholder Management in Northern Tanzania

This case study describes the work of the forest and farm producer organisation MVIWAARUSHA in Tanzania and gives recommendations for its improvement. Enterprise development that supports agrobiodiversity, protects intact natural vegetation and develops agroforestry systems is being built through MVIWAARUSHA’s trainings in entrepreneurship.

These efforts are underpinned by inclusive finance mechanisms that reduce the risks of innovation and promote on-farm agro-biodiversity through farmer-led experimentation and seed system strengthening.

Historical biogeography and character-mapping of Acridocarpus (Malpighiaceae) evidence a revised infrageneric classification system and shifts in African biomes from the Eocene to the Miocene

This study reconstructs the molecular phylogeny, historical biogeography, and morphological evolution of Acridocarpus (Malpighiaceae). Using six DNA markers, character mapping, and dated phylogenies, it proposes a new monophyletic infrageneric classification system.

The genus originated ~43 Ma in African–Madagascan rainforests, with multiple Oligocene colonisations of dry forests. The Miocene diversification of Madagascan savannas is corroborated.

Advancing Multifunctional Agroforestry in Ethiopia: Evidence, Innovation and Policy Pathways

This brief outlines how the MAF4E project advances multifunctional agroforestry in Ethiopia through Living Labs that link science, community innovation and policy. It generates high‑resolution evidence on tree growth, soils and carbon, while piloting Rural Resource Centres and homestead agroforestry to create green jobs, improve nutrition and resilience.

Despite strong impacts, scaling requires a national agroforestry strategy, long‑term finance, stronger extension systems, market development and gender‑ and youth‑inclusive policies to meet climate and biodiversity commitments nationally

CROSSROADS-SSA Biodiversity Toolkit

This Biodiversity Toolkit from CROSSROADS-SSA, led by the University of Aberdeen, working in Ethiopia, provides standardised field protocols to assess key ecosystem processes, including soil fauna activity, decomposition and nutrient cycling, pest pressure, pollination success and seed predation.

The toolkit strengthens capacity for participatory biodiversity assessment, enabling practitioners and communities to generate comparable data to inform sustainable land management and Nature-based Solutions.
